Hi there,
hot off the press: The European deeptech report 2023! Last week, Lakestar, Walden Catalyst, and dealroom.co unveiled one of the most eagerly anticipated reports of the year (at least for me). Below, a quick summary of the key findings.
But first, let's delve into a comprehensive overview of the Swiss landscape within the report, highlighting some of the key findings. (I am always impressed by the remarkable achievements of ETH Zurich and EPF Lausanne, two of Switzerland's leading universities.)
🇨🇭 Swiss landscape overview within the report:
In Switzerland, ~every 3rd VC dollar went to Deeptech companies (2018-2023)
Swiss universities mentioned: ETH Zurich, EPFL, University of Zurich. ETH Zurich and EPFL are among the top 20 computer sciences and engineering institutes worldwide.
ETH Zurich is the European university that created the most Deeptech spinout value
ETH Zurich is the n.1 European university for AI research and
innovation based on the number of AI patents (20)
Swiss startups mentioned in the report: Auterion, ANYbotics, Axelera, ClearSpace, Climeworks, CRISPR Therapeutics, MindMaze, Sensirion
Swiss VCs mentioned in the report: ABB, b2venture, Lakestar, Swisscom Ventures, Verve Ventures
…🤖 and from the executive summary (Slide n.2):
Overall: Deep Tech is amongst the most resilient VC categories with ~$15bn YTD 2023 (almost on par with 2022 vs. -70% in Fintech)
Geographical: The UK ($3.4bn), France ($3.2bn), and Sweden ($3.2bn) have received the most Deep Tech funding across Europe
Deep Tech hubs are emerging: Stockholm ($3.2bn – mega-rounds), London ($1.5bn), Paris ($1.5bn), Grenoble ($1.2bn – mega-rounds), and Munich ($700m)
Exits: The most notable exits were the IPO of ARM (~$54bn) and the acquisition of InstaDeep by BioNTech (~$562m)
We need more growth financing and value creation in Europe (see slide 117 for details)
What´s your take on the status of deeptech in Europe? Let me know!
Congrats to Cradle for raising $24M Series A from Index Ventures and Kindred Capital!
Cheers,
Gian
